Vinesh Phogat ineligible for Wrestling Federation of India’s Asian Games 2026 selection trials
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Wednesday announced the eligibility criteria and schedule for the selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games.
As per the criteria, returning women’s wrestler Vinesh Phogat will not be able to participate in the trials. The 31-year-old is set to make her wrestling comeback after nearly 18 months at the National Open Ranking Tournament in the 57kg category.
WFI has specified that only the medal winners from 2025 Senior National Wrestling Championship and 2026 Senior Federation Cup will be allowed to enter the trials, along with Under-20 National Wrestling Championship medallists.
The last point of the criteria specifies that, ‘past performance will not be considered.’
Eligibility criteria for the selection trials:
- All medal winners of 2025 Senior National Wrestling Championship held at Ahmedabad (Gujarat) from 12th to 14th December 2025.
- All medal winners of 2026 Senior Federation Cup held at Ghaziabad (UP) from 12th to 14th February 2026.
- All medal winners of the Under-20 National Wrestling Championship held in Bhilai (Chhattisgarh) from 10th to 12th April 2026.
The Women Wrestling trials will happen on May 30 at Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi, while the Free Style & Greco Roman Style trials will happen on May 31 at SAI Regional Centre, Lucknow.
The trials will be held in the following 18 Olympic weight categories:
Free Style: 57, 65, 74, 86, 97 & 125 Kg.
Greco Roman Style: 60, 67, 77, 87, 97 & 130 Kg.
Women Wrestling: 50, 53, 57, 62, 68 & 76 Kg.
