Duplantis promises new home Monaco a world record

Pole vault phenomenon Armand Duplantis promised to target a 16th world record at the Monaco Diamond league event on July 11th when he confirmed his participation on Thursday.

The double Olympic and triple world champion set his first world record of 6.17m back in 2020, and established the most recent mark of 6.31m in Sweden in March.

The 26-year-old recently relocated to Monaco after living in the United States and Sweden, the nation whose yellow and blue colours he competes in.

“Now that I’m here and train here, this is my home stadium and I feel that a world record is needed and it would be fantastic if I was able to do that here,” he said at hotel near the stade Louis-II.

“That’s where my mind is at,” said Duplantis, who also revealed he had persuaded the Monaco organisers to add the men’s pole vault to a programme that originally had just the women’s pole vault.

The Diamond League season starts at Shanghai May 16. Monaco is the tenth event on the 15 scheduled.
