Grand Chess Tour 2026: Gukesh loses to Sindarov at Super Rapid & Blitz in Poland


World champion D. Gukesh had a mixed set of results on the first day of the Blitz event at the Grand Chess Tour Super Rapid and Blitz Poland on Friday.

The Indian had defeated the World title challenger Javokhir Sindarov in the Rapid round earlier in the tournament, but suffered a reverse to him on Friday in the eighth round in the shorter format.

Out of the nine Blitz games on the day, Gukesh won three, drew two and lost four. The 19-year-old bettered Jan-Krzysztof Duda of Poland, Hans Niemann of USA, and his compatriot Wesley So. Gukesh lost to Sindarov, Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Alireza Firouzja, and Fabiano Caruana.

Gukesh is currently fifth in the standings, having won 13 out of the available 27 points. He had ended the Rapid round with nine points.

Niemann leads the standings with 16.5 points with nine rapid games to be played on Saturday.
