Mayank Chakraborty becomes India’s 94th Chess Grandmaster
Mayank Chakraborty became the 94th Indian to secure the title of chess Grandmaster after scoring his final norm during the Hotel Stockholm North by First Hotels Young Talents tournament in Sweden.
He achieved the title after beating Philip Lindgren in the eighth round, bagging his final GM norm with a round to spare.
He went on to win the tournament with a rating performance of 2670. He scored 7.0/9, finishing one point ahead of the entire field, which in turn took his live rating to 2508.
England’s Jonah Willow B and Norway’s Aksel Bu Kvaloy finished second and third respectively.
Hailing from Assam, 16-year-old Mayank becomes the first player from the NorthEast region to gain the GM status.
