World Chess Championship 2024: D. Gukesh’s full list of achievements, awards


Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh became the youngest world champion in the history of chess after defeating China’s Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship 2024 in Singapore on Thursday.

Gukesh’s title win came after he trumped reigning champion Ding in the 14th round. The game was set for a draw before reigning champion Ding blundered in the 55th move, effectively gifting the game to his rival.

Gukesh qualified for the World Championship after winning the Candidates tournament earlier this year.

He started playing chess when he was seven. He got his GM title at the age of 12 years, 7 months and 17 days. In September, he surpassed Viswanathan Anand as the top-ranked Indian chess player to break his 37-year reign at the top.

Won five gold medals – under-12 individual classical, under-12 individual rapid and blitz, and under-12 team rapid and blitz at the Asian Youth Chess Championships in 2018.

Became Internation Master (IM) on March 10, 2018.

Became Grand Master (GM) on January 15, 2019.

Finished second in the ninth HD Bank Open in March 2019 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Won Hillerød Chess Club’s 110th anniversary tournament in February 2020.

Won Cannes Chess Festival in May 2020.

Won team bronze and individual gold at the 2022 FIDE Chess Olympiad.

Won the Chennai Masters 2023.

Won the Candidates 2024 in Canada.

Part of the gold medal winning Indian team at Chess Olympiad 2024.

Became youngest world champion in history after beating reigning champion Ding Liren at World Chess Championship 2024.
