Women’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025: India survives Korea challenge to begin Super 4s campaign with win

India edged Korea 4-2 to open its Super 4s campaign with a win on Wednesday at the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Stadium and remain unbeaten in the tournament.

Vaishnavi Phalke gave India the lead in just the second minute of the match during a penalty corner. She injected ball after which Udita’s shot was saved by the Korean goalkeeper. But Vaishnavi had positioned herself near the goal and she was there to turn in the rebound.

India went into the half-time break with a one-goal lead, and soon doubled it in the 32nd minute.

Rutuja Dadaso Pisal got the ball inside the circle and squared it to Sangita Kumari who had an easy tap-in. Less than a minute later, Korea’s Kim Yujin found the back of the goal through a penalty corner.

India restored its two-goal cushion when Lalremsiami received the ball inside the circle from Udita, turned, and passe the ball past the Korea goalkeeper, who got a touch on it but failed to keep it out.

However last year’s runner-up Korea kept the pressure on the Indians after Yujin bagged her second goal of the match in the 53rd minute, once again through a penalty corner.

India put the game to bed in the final minute of the match after Rutuja put the ball in the back of the goal during a penalty corner.
