Watch: Mumbai Crowd erupts as Viswanathan Anand beats Gukesh in Global Chess League
Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand beat reigning world champion D Gukesh in a Global Chess league match in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Ganges Grandmasters’ Anand, a five-time world champion, bettered Alaskan Knights’ Gukesh with white pieces to claim his first win of the tournament.
The 56-year-old Anand nudged ahead of his younger compatriot in a game which progressed from a Sicilian Defence opening.
Anand pounced on a mid-game mistake from Gukesh (34. Rc8) to tilt the game in his favour. He then piled the pressure on the A and B ranks to push further ahead in the game.
With a defeat emerging as unavoidable, Gukesh resigned ahead of his 45th move.
