Table Tennis World Championships 2025: Indian challenge ends after Ghorpade-Chitale pair crashes out


India’s campaign at the World Table Tennis Championships ended after the women’s doubles pair of Yashaswini Ghorpade and Diya Chitale lost to the Japanese duo, Miwa Harimoto and Miyuu Kihara, in the round of 16 in Doha on Wednesday.

The Indians could not find their footing in the match and lost 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-9). Their run to the round of 16 was the best the nation could do across categories at this edition of the event.

Chitale and Ghorpade had rallied from a game down to beat the Singaporean duo of Zeng Jian and Ser Lin Qian 6-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-9 in their round-of-32 clash.

On Tuesday, Manav Thakkar put up a spirited fight against world number four Harimoto Tomokazu before going down in the round of 64 while Manika Batra produced an ordinary showing against lower-ranked Park Gahyeon.

Thakkar, ranked 48th, matched his more accomplished Japanese opponent stroke for stroke in the third and fifth games before going down 11-13, 3-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 3-11.

Meanwhile, 46th-ranked Manika looked out of sorts against world number 130 Park from South Korea and lost 8-11, 7-11, 5-11, 8-11.
