Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty face China’s Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang in the men’s doubles semifinal of the year-ender BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou on Saturday.
Seeded third, Satwik and Chirag qualified for the semifinals by topping Group B. In their tournament opener, they took down Liang and Wang 12-21, 22-20, 21-14. In their second match, they defeated Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri 21-11, 16-21, 21-11. In their final group-stage fixture, they won 17-21, 21-18, 21-15 against Malaysians Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
No Indian men’s pair had ever reached the last-four stage of the World Tour Finals before two-time World Championships bronze medallists Satwik and Chirag.
PV Sindhu remains the only Indian to win the title at the season-ender, claiming the women’s singles crown in 2018, while Saina Nehwal reached the final in 2011.
In doubles, Jwala Gutta and V. Diju were mixed doubles finalists at the 2009 Super Series Finals.
