SQUAD ANALYSIS

Having retained their core from the previous campaign, the Pirates signed eight new players at the PKL Season 12 Player Auction to assemble a strong squad that covered most of the bases for a total amount of INR 4.966 crore.

Ahead of Season 12, the Pirates appointed former India Kabaddi team captain Anup Kumar as their new head coach, replacing Narender Redhu.

Anup was a member of the Indian national Kabaddi team that clinched Asian gold medals in 2010 and 2014, the South Asian gold medal and the Kabaddi World Cup in 2016. The Arjuna Award winner guided U Mumba to Pro Kabaddi League finals in the first three seasons, including claiming the coveted PKL title in Season 2, before concluding his illustrious PKL career with the Jaipur Pink Panthers.

Strength: The team is bolstered by a strong defensive performance. The side retained Hamid Mirzaei, Thiyagarajan Yuvaraj and Navdeep. But the big retention, where the team used the Final Bid Match (FBM) option in the auction, was Ankit Jaglan for INR 1.573 Crore. Ankit was crucial to Pirates making the final last season, with 79 tackle points in 25 games.

The FBM option was also used to retain right cover Deepak Singh for INR 86 Lakh, this time for two seasons. He registered a heartening 64 tackle points in 25 games.

Sombir Gulia and Amin Ghorbani only strenghthen the pack for 13 Lakh each.

In Sanket Sawant (left cover), Saurabh, Prianshu and Balasaheb Shahaji Jadhav (right cover), the squad has incredible defensive depth.

Weakness: Devank Dalal’s departure leaves a big gab in the raiding attack. While Pirates have retained Ayan Lochab and signed veteran Maninder Singh for 20 Lakh, their raiding might not be as strong as they may want it to be.

Shubham Shinde has also left with Telugu Titans acquiring his services. He was one of the standout defenders last season with 56 points in 22 matches and a calm head as captain. The side will miss his composure especially in crucial passages of play.

Patna Pirates will take on Jaipur Pink Panthers in its campaign opener on September 2, 2025 in Vizag.
