Neeraj Chopra on Arshad Nadeem: “We never had a very strong relationship”

Indian javelin star and two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has opened up about how the recent India-Pakistan conflict has affected his off-field equation with Pakistani thrower Arshad Nadeem. Asked whether the tensions between the two countries had any bearing on their personal rapport, Neeraj offered a measured response.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Diamond League event in Doha, Neeraj said, “Firstly I want to clarify that we never had a very strong relationship. But if somebody talks to me respectfully, I always like to talk to them the same way. But things won’t be the same after this,” said Neeraj.

Neeraj’s invitation to Arshad for the Neeraj Chopra Classic — a javelin meet scheduled to be held in Bengaluru later this month — drew criticism from some on Indian social media, who questioned the timing and optics of the move.

The organisers of the NC Classic issued a statement confirming the postponement, citing safety and broader concerns:

“The decision has been made after careful thought and consultation, with the well-being of athletes, stakeholders, and the broader community as the top priority.”

A revised schedule for the competition will be announced in due course.
