Neeraj Chopra leads India’s 19-member squad for Tokyo World Athletics Ch’ships 2025, Sable left out by AFI


The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Sunday announced the country’s final squad for the upcoming World Athletics Championships, set to happen in Tokyo.

Reigning world javelin champion Neeraj Chopra will be India’s best bet for a medal at the championship. There will be three more Indian javelin throwers in action in the event — Sachin Yadav, Yash Vir Singh and Rohit Yadav.

Neeraj qualified for the world championships through a wildcard he earned by virtue of being the defending champion.

Three Indian athletes qualified by bettering the entry standards — Gulveer Singh (5000m), Praveen Chithravel (triple jump) and Parul Chaudhary (3000m steeplechase).

Gulveer will also participate in the 10,000m race. Middle-distance runner Pooja will be the only other Indian to participate in two events (800m and 1500m).

Three athletes – Avinash Sable, Nandini Agasara and Akshdeep Singh – had also qualified but they are medically unfit and therefore, haven’t been selected.

The World Athletics Championships will run from September 13 to 21.

10) Servin Sebastian – 20km Racewalk (Ranking – 34/50)

11) Ram Baboo – 35km Racewalk (Ranking – 50/50)

12) Gulveer Singh – 10,000m (Qualified by Invitation)

13) Sandeep – 35km Racewalk (Qualified by Invitation)

14) Rohit Yadav – Javelin (Qualified by Invitation)
