Neeraj Chopra finishes 8th in javelin throw final at World Athletics Championships 2025


India’s Neeraj Chopra failed to defend his title after he finished eighth in the men’s javelin throw final at the 2025 edition of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Thursday.

The former Olympic champion ended with a best throw of 84.03m, which he notched up in his second attempt.

The gold medal went to 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott (88.16m) of Trinidad and Tobago. The silver and bronze medals were clinched by Grenada’s Anderson Peters (87.38m) and Curtis Thompson (86.67m) respectively.

The Indian began with a decent throw of 83.65m, after which he improved his best throw by 0.38m. His third throw was a foul but he managed to advance to the next round in the final.

In his fourth attempt, Neeraj threw a disappointing 82.86m after which he slipped and conceded a foul in his fifth and final throw to finish outside the podium places for the first time in 26 competitions.

In qualification, Neeraj had thrown a best throw of 84.85m. Prior to the Worlds, the Indian finished second at the Diamond League Final with a best throw of 85.01m.
