Neeraj Chopra finishes 2nd in Diamond League Final: How much prize money will the Indian javelin thrower win?

Neeraj Chopra managed a best attempt of 85.01 metres in Zurich on Thursday to finish in second place in men’s javelin throw at the Diamond League Final.

The two-time Olympic medallist started with an attempt of 84.35m and followed it up with 82.00m. However, Julian Weber and Keshorn Walcott remained ahead of him, having recorded bests of 91.51m and 84.95m, respectively.

But Neeraj came firing on his last throw, despite registering three invalid attempts, to land the spear at a distance of 85.01m and clinch second place. The 27-year-old will take home $12,000 or Rs. 10.50 lakh for finishing second in the final.

The winner of the Diamond League final, Germany’s Weber on Thursday, won $30,000 or approximately Rs. 26 lakh. The third-placed athlete gets $7,000 or Rs. 6.12 lakh.

Neeraj’s outing was sub-par given his lofty standards, yet he was able to keep his streak of finishing in the top two, which dates back to 2021, alive. This was the 26th straight competition where Neeraj ended in the top two.

He will next be in action during the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
