Macau Open 2025: Tharun stuns top seed to reach quarterfinals; Ayush, Dhruv-Tanisha pair knocked out
India’s Tharun Mannepalli upset top seed Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong, China, to reach the quarterfinals of the Macau Open, a BWF World Tour Super 300 event, on Thursday.
The 23-year-old Tharun came from behind to beat World No. 15 Lee 19-21, 21-14, 22-20 in an hour-long battle.
World No. 47 Tharun has reached the quarterfinals of a Super 300 tournament for the second time this year. He made it to the same stage at the German Open in February.
The Indian faces World No. 87 Hu Zhe An of China next for a place in the semifinals.

However, Ayush Shetty, the seventh-seeded Indian, was knocked out after a 21-18, 21-16 loss to Malaysia’s Justin Hoh.
In mixed doubles, the fifth-seeded Indian duo of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto went down to Malaysia’s Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing after clinching the opening game.
In women’s singles, youngster Rakshitha Sree Santhosh Ramraj took second seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand to a decider before losing the 51-minute contest.
Later in the day, Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen will be in action, taking on Indonesia’s Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo.
Former World No. 1 men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, seeded second, will be up against Japan’s Kakeru Kumagai and Hiroki Nishi. Pruthvi Roy and K. Sai Pratheek, another Indian men’s doubles pair, will face the fourth-seeded Malaysian pair of Junaidi Arif and Roy King Yap while the women’s doubles duo of Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra will play against the eighth-seeded Indonesian pair of Meilysa Puspitasari and Rachel Rose.
