ISSF Jr World Cup: Raiza Dhillon loses skeet gold to Arianna Nember, India finishes 1-2 in mixed air pistol

Olympian Raiza Dhillon was slightly shaky at the business end of competition and Arianna Nember of Italy pounced on her chance by smashing the clay birds with remarkable assurance to clinch the skeet gold with a 53-51 victory in the Junior World Cup at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Saturday.

Raiza matched the field with a strong fare, except that she missed three of the last 10 birds to lose the grip on the gold in front of a large gathering of home fans.

Qualification topper Mansi Raghuwanshi, the reigning Asian junior champion, did well to clinch the bronze to swell India’s collection.

India did win the gold and silver in mixed air pistol event, to bolster its collection at the top of the medals table to three gold, five silver and three bronze.

However, the fact remained that Harmehar Lally and Atul Singh Rajawat who had done well to qualify for the junior men skeet final with a score of 121, were unable to stop Marco Coco of Italy, Lassi Kauppinen of Finland and Andreas Pontikis of Cyprus from overtaking them to the medals.

There was a lot to cheer for the host, but the competition was lively, especially in shotgun, where Italy asserted its supremacy by snapping the two gold medals so far.

Of course, it was a very creditable effort by Raiza and Mansi to overtake the 14-year-old Chloe Chaleunsinh of USA for the medals. Agrima Kanwar had also shot well to make the final in only her second international competition.
