Indian Sports Wrap, May 20: Adriyan wins silver at ISSF Junior World Cup

Adriyan Karmakar opened India’s medal account at the ISSF Junior World Cup on Tuesday with a silver on debut in the 50m rifle prone event, ensuring a positive start for the country in the tournament.

The 20-year-old junior 3P national champion aggregated 626.7 after 60 shots and missed out on gold by just 0.3 points to Sweden’s Jesper Johansson.

USA’s Griffin Lake won the bronze with 624.6.

Adriyan, who has earlier represented India juniors at the world championships but never in a World Cup, shot confidently and was one of the earliest participants to finish. His effort was also a junior national record in the event.

Among other Indians in the fray, 15-year-old Rohit Kanyan finished 12th with a score of 620.2, while Vedant Nitin Waghmare shot 614.4 to end in 35th place.

Korea beats India in Asia-Oceania Junior Davis Cup tournament

Third seed Korea beat seventh seed India 3-0 in a group-C league match of the Asia-Oceania Junior Davis Cup under-16 boys tennis tournament in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, on Tuesday.

It was the second defeat in two matches following the one against unseeded Uzbekistan for India.

With both Korea and Uzbekistan registering two wins each, India was ruled out of the quarterfinals meant for the top two teams from each of the four groups.

Australia, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Hong Kong, China and host Kazakhstan were the other six teams to confirm their qualification for the quarterfinals. Like India, eighth seed New Zealand also lost out in the race for quarterfinals.

The top four teams will make it to the World Group stage.

Korea bt India 3-0 (Kim Dongjae bt Prakaash Sarran 6-1, 6-2; Kim Dongmin bt Tavish Pahwa 6-3, 6-7(1), 6-2; Cho Min Hyuk & Kim Dongmin bt Tavish & Prateek Sheoran 7-6(1), 6-2).
