Indian Athletics Series-1: Sreeshankar, Ancy Sojan win long jump event
Murali Sreeshankar and Ancy Sojan won the men’s and women’s long jump events in the Indian Athletics Series-1 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Saturday.
Asian Games 2022 silver medallist Sreeshankar had a good outing, going past the eight-meter mark in five of his six attempts. His 8.13m third effort was enough to finish clear of nearest rival, Bihar’s Sunny Kumar (7.90m).
Reliance’s Ancy dominated the women’s long jump, while 2025 Asian Championships bronze medallist Shaili Singh disappointed.
Ancy was full of energy, going into the lead with a leap of 6.54m in his first attempt. Shaili started with a 6.52m jump, but followed with four fouls.
Shaili’s coach and 2003 World Championship bronze medallist Anju Bobby George offered tips and encouragement from the sidelines, but her ward did not pull the trigger on the take-off board to finish her final attempt with a weak 4.99m effort.
