Gulveer Singh registers third-fastest Indian time in 1500m, claims Asian lead


Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh claimed the Asian lead in the men’s 1500m event, at the Sunset Tour, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver level meet, in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Gulveer clocked 3:36.58, the third-fastest time by an Indian in 1500m, as he finished fourth in Los Angeles. This was the 27-year-old’s maiden race over this distance.

Only national record-holder Jinson Johnson (3:35.24) and Parvej Khan (3:36.21) have recorded a faster 1500m race for India.

Gulveer is the Indian national record holder in the 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m events and had recently claimed golds in the latter two distances at the Asian Athletics Championships.

He will now head to Colorado Springs, Los Angeles for training from July 15 to September 3, along with steeplechasers Avinash Sable, Parul Chaudhary. The government has approved Rs 41.29 lakh for the trio’s training expenses.
