FIH Junior Women’s World Cup: Germany beats India 3-1

India suffered a 1–3 defeat against Germany in its second match of the FIH Junior Women’s World Cup in Santiago on Wednesday. Hina Bano (58’) scored the lone goal for India, while Lena Frerichs (5’), Annika Schönhoff (52’) and Martina Reisenegger (59’) were on target for Germany.

Germany took an early lead through a penalty stroke in the fifth minute, with Frerichs converting calmly from the spot. Despite the setback, India gradually settled into the game and began to create chances, but lacked the finishing touch to draw level in the opening quarter.

The intensity remained high in the second quarter, with India pushing for an equaliser. Germany earned another penalty stroke towards the end of the half but this time Frerichs failed to convert, allowing India a reprieve as the teams went into the break with Germany leading 1–0.

India started the second half on the front foot, adding impetus to its attack, but could not find the breakthrough as the match moved into the final quarter.

Germany eventually doubled its lead through Schönhoff, who tapped home from close range. With time running out, India pulled one back through Bano, who showed good awareness to deflect in from a Penalty Corner. Any hopes of a late comeback were dashed almost immediately, as Reisenegger struck the third for Germany to seal the contest.

India will next face Ireland on December 5.
