FIDE Women’s World Cup: Divya, Humpy reach quarterfinals


Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy booked their spots in the quarterfinals of the FIDE Women’s World Cup in Batumi, Georgia, on Friday.

Divya stunned second-seeded Chinese Zhu Jiner 1.5-0.5 in tiebreaks in the pre-quarterfinals.

Experience Koneru Humpy also beat Switzerland’s Alexandra Kosteniuk with the same scoreline in the tiebreaks. Humpy will take on China’s Yuxin Song for a place in the semifinals.

Harika Dronavalli and R. Vaishali both lost their first games in the tiebreaks before winning the second to keep the contest going against Russia’s Kateryna Lagno and Meruert Kamalidenova of Kazakhstan, respectively.

The winner of the match between Harika and Lagno will be up against Divya in the quarterfinals.

The World Cup offers three spots to the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament, set to happen in the first half of 2026.
