Asian Shooting Championships: Neeru wins women’s gold; India sweep women’s junior event
Neeru Dhanda won the women’s trap gold by beating Ray Bassil of Qatar by six points and combined with bronze medalist Aashima Ahlawat and Preeti Rajak to clinch the team gold for India in the 16th Asian Shooting Championship in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, on Monday.
Bhowneesh Mendiratta won the men’s trap silver behind Ol Ying of China to swell the Indian collection.
But what swelled the hearts of the Indian shooting fraternity was the sweep of the junior sports pistol individual medals by Payal Khatri, Naamya Kapoor and Tejaswani.
The trio, however, was beaten to the team gold by Korea.
The junior collection compensated to some extent for the blank from the Indian women, despite Manu Bhaker and Esha Singh shooting the top score of 588 in qualification.
The women’s team did win the bronze behind China and Korea.
With the addition of three gold, four silver and three bronze on the day, India took its tally further on top of the medals table with 29 gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze.
