AFI makes SRY gene test mandatory for female athletes
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has made the SRY gene test mandatory for female athletes competing at the national level, aligning its eligibility framework with regulations laid down by World Athletics.
The global governing body requires athletes to meet specified criteria to compete in the female category at world ranking events and other international competitions. AFI’s decision is aimed at ensuring Indian athletes remain eligible under these standards.
The SRY (Sex-determining Region Y) gene is located on the Y chromosome and plays a central role in male biological development. The test detects the presence or absence of this gene and is being positioned as a biological eligibility assessment for participation in the female category.
AFI has also stated that it will invest in research and development, including DNA testing and systematic data collection, to strengthen its scientific framework in athlete management. Operational details, including implementation protocols and safeguards, have yet to be publicly outlined.
Eligibility regulations in women’s sport have been widely debated globally, raising questions around fairness, inclusion, privacy and medical ethics. The federation’s move signals its intent to bring domestic competition structures in line with international governing standards.
