Koneru Humpy withdraws from FIDE Women’s Candidates due to West Asia conflict
Indian chess Grandmaster Koneru Humpy announced her withdrawal from the upcoming FIDE Women’s Candidates tournament through a social media post on Sunday.
Humpy cited security reasons due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia and its potential implications in Candidates host nation Cyprus as the reason for her withdrawal.
“After deep reflection, I have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament. No event, no matter how important, can come before personal safety and well-being. Despite the assurances provided, I do not feel fully secure under the current circumstances. This is a painful but necessary decision, and I stand by it,” wrote Humpy in her statement.
Humpy had earlier said that she is aware that she would miss a huge opportunity if she chooses not to travel to Cyprus but feels “life is bigger than sport.”
“Of course, I will miss the chance…but definitely not a pleasant situation to play…” The two-time World Rapid champion said her family also felt safety was the priority and would support any decision she takes.
As per FIDE regulations, if any replacement is needed for the Women’s Candidates, the spot shall be awarded to the next yet unqualified player(s) of the ‘FIDE Women’s Events 2024-25’.
As per this criteria, Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk will be Humpy’s replacement in the tournament.
