Sportstar Conclave: Shreyasi Singh says Bihar can host Olympics 2036 events
Shreyasi Singh, Minister of Sports and I&T, Bihar and a Commonwealth Games gold medallist said that her State is capable of hosting multiple events if India wins its bid for the 2036 Olympics.
Addressing the audience at the Sportstar Focus Bihar Conclave in Patna, Shreyasi said, “I would request honourable Minister of State, Sports, Government of India, Raksha Khadse ji, to grant a couple of events to our State. We have hosted international events earlier and are capable of doing so again. The youngsters of the state can learn and benefit from the exposure. I would request Raksha ji to take my request to honourable Prime Minster, that Bihar has its eyes on Olympics. I would urge the same from for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.”
Shreyasi said that the Bihar Government is attempting to strengthen the sporting ecosystem in the State and its bidding for the 2036 Olympics with a two-pronged approach – developing and identifying talent at the grassroots level and creating world-class infrastructure good enough to host international event.
The Olympian added that she aspires to see more athletes from Bihar making it to the Indian contingents for multi-sport events.
“I was one of the only athletes from Bihar. The National Rifle Association of India gave me the chance to go to international events. We won Junior World Cup in 2009. Haryana and Tamil Nadu usually dominate the contingents. When we reached the airport in Delhi, every State welcomed their athlete but the one from Bihar was left alone.
“My father said Bihar needs to work on giving the basics to its people. Only when it works on sport and gives attention to it, can we move forward. I continued to perform and help bring attention to sport. When I won the Commonwealth Games gold in 2018 then I got the grand welcome I had hoped for. We are today wanting to host the 2036 Olympics. When we do that, I hope a lot of Bihar athletes participate. In India’s sports map, Bihar barely made it earlier. But in 2024, I participated in Paris Olympics. So we have started and now we have to take it forward.”
Shreyasi added that sports prospering also bodes well for the other industries in the State.
“If athletes progress, then an entire system moves ahead and develops with them. Professions like nutritionist, physical trainer, mental trainer, manager also get more opportunities. This is a great avenue to create jobs. Bihar is developing rapidly in terms of business and industry. You have the chance to synergize these operations with sports as well,” she said.
The Sportstar ‘Focus Bihar’ Conclave is presented by the Bihar Sports Authority and Department of Sports, Government of Bihar. The Associate Sponsor is Indian Oil Corporation Limited, while State Bank of India is the Banking Partner.
