Chess World Cup, Quarterfinals: Indians in action — Schedule, opponents, streaming info
Arjun Erigaisi was the only Indian left in the ongoing Chess World Cup in Goa at the end of the fifth round on Sunday.
After a draw in the first classical game, second seed Arjun took down American GM and two-time former champion Levon Aronian with black pieces in 38 moves in the second for a 1.5-0.5 win.
Pentala Harikrishna lost to Mexico’s Jose Martinez Alcantara in the tie-breaks in the fifth round.
Arjun and China’s Wei Yi, the seventh seed, are the only two players among the top 10 remaining in the tournament. They come face to face in the quarterfinals beginning on Monday.
The World Cup offers three spots for the FIDE Candidates Tournament, set to happen in the first half of 2026.
