FIH Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup trophy tour flagged off at SDAT Stadium in Chennai


The trophy tour of the FIH Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup was flagged off in a function at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai on Monday by Udhayanidhi Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister and Tamil Nadu’s Sports Minister, and Tayyab Ikram, FIH president.

The trophy will tour all 38 districts from Kanyakumari to Chennai, while the World Cup will be held in Chennai and Madurai from November 28 to December 10.

“The purpose is to celebrate and promote the Junior World Cup and create awareness about hockey in Tamil Nadu,” said a release.

Bhola Nath Singh, secretary of Hockey India, said the turf in Madurai will be re-laid by November 15, and the stadium will have a capacity of 3000. “The turf in Madurai will be fantastic and good enough to host an International-level tournament. Madurai will have a practice turf, too,” he said.

The SDAT Stadium in Chennai is getting a facelift with new chairs being laid out for spectators, while the stand opposite the Kalaignar Centenary Pavilion has been roofed.

The Indian junior men’s team is expected to reach the city on November 15.
