Aman Sehrawat banned by WFI after exceeding 57kg limit

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has suspended Paris Olympics bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat for one year after he exceeded the 57kg weight limit and was disqualified from the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, last month.

The suspension, effective from September 23, bars Aman from all wrestling-related activities at national and international levels. His coaching staff have been issued formal warnings.

Aman was 1.7kg over the limit during the weigh-in and was subsequently show-caused by the WFI. After reviewing his response on September 29 and consulting the support staff, the federation’s disciplinary committee deemed his explanation “unsatisfactory.”

In its communication to Aman, the WFI said the wrestler, who had joined the preparatory camp in Porec 18 days before his scheduled bout on September 14, had enough time to maintain his weight and conditioning.

As an Olympic medallist, the federation expected the highest standards of discipline, professionalism and commitment from him. “Failure to manage your weight has not only damaged your personal credibility but also tarnished the nation’s image on the global stage, causing disappointment among the wrestling fraternity and supporters,” the letter read.

The WFI said the lapse “deprived India of a potential medal” and caused “significant financial loss due to the expenditure incurred by the Government of India for your participation and training.”

If the suspension runs its full course, it could disrupt Aman’s preparation for the 2026 Asian Games, scheduled from September 30 to October 3.

This marks the third such disciplinary case involving an Indian wrestler within a year, following Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification at the Paris Olympics and Neha Sangwan’s at the 2025 World Under-20 Championships.
