World Para Athletics Championships 2025: Dharambir wins silver in club throw F51, Atul grabs discus throw F57 bronze

On a day the retreating monsoon decided to turn up in full force in the city, Dharambir Nain proved he was still one of the best, winning silver in the club throw F51 category on the fifth day of the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships on Thursday.

With some of the events getting postponed and the rest continuing late into the night, the 36-year-old Dharambir, bronze medallist in the previous edition and India’s flag-bearer for the opening ceremony, threw 29.71m in his final attempt to finish behind Serbia’s Aleksandar Radisic.

It was one of only two bright spots on a day of disappointments for the host. Pranav Soorma, the silver medallist at Paris Paralympics, managed a season’s best of 28.19m to finish fifth. Atul Kaushik’s 45.61m in the discus throw F57 was enough to earn him a bronze for India’s second medal of the day.

Among the near-misses was 19-year-old Haney narrowly missing out on a podium finish in his maiden Worlds with a fourth-place finish in the men’s discus throw F37.

In the men’s 400m T47, Asiad gold medallist Dilip Gavit led at the halfway mark to raise hopes of India’s first track medal in the competition but was outpaced in the final stretch to finish fourth.

Affected by rain

The evening session had only begun when it started pouring, forcing officials to suspend events for more than an hour. Once the competition restarted, the wet and humid conditions saw athletes struggle.

The men’s long jump T64 and shot put F46 events had to be postponed to Friday evening. It didn’t stop Swiss Catherine Debrunner from adding her fourth gold here in the 100m T53 with a new CR of 15.50s.

In the T54 1500m, Hua Jin of China set a new championship record of 2:50.46, pushing world record holder Marcel Hug of Switzerland to fourth.
