Sinquefield Cup 2025: Wesley So clinches title in playoff; Praggnanandhaa finishes second


American GM Wesley So clinched the Sinquefield Cup 2025 following a dramatic final round and a three-way playoff in Saint Louis on Thursday.

India’s R Praggnanandhaa finished second after falling short in the playoff, while the USA’s Fabiano Caruana was placed third.

In the ninth and final round, overnight leaders Praggnanandhaa and Caruana settled for draws, against Levon Aronian and D Gukesh respectively.

This opened the door for Wesley, who entered the playoff for the top spot with a win over Uzbek GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov.

Praggnanandhaa opened the playoff with a masterful win with white pieces over Caruana. But, with the title win in sight, the Indian GM fumbled to a defeat to Wesley in the second game.

Wesley closed off his second Sinquefield Cup win by holding Caruana to a draw.
