Rohith Krishna S becomes India’s 89th Grandmaster
Rohith Krishna S became India’s 89th Grandmaster on Tuesday at the Almaty Masters Qonaev Cup in Kazakhstan.
The 20-year-old Rohith beat Armenian IM Artur Davtyan in the last round to finish with six points out of nine, making his third and final GM norm in the process.
Coached by K. Visweswaran, Rohith achieved his maiden GM norm when he won the Hotel Stockholm North GM Round-Robin tournament in March this year.
His second GM norm came at the Dubai Open in June.
He had attained the title of International Master (IM) in 2022.
India had its first Grandmaster in Viswanathan Anand in 1988 while Divya Deshmukh became the country’s 88th Grandmaster last month with her historic triumph at the FIDE World Cup.
