Senthil, Maaya keep Indian flag flying at ITF J300 event

The reigning National men’s champion Rethin Pranav relied on his big game and a high degree of confidence to shut out the sharp challenge from Samarth Sahita 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the ITF junior tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex on Thursday.

Even though he was unable to play at his best, and allowed a 3-0 lead in the second set slip, top-seeded Rethin had enough resources at his disposal to quell the spirited approach of the talented Samarth with a classic single-handed backhand.

In the semifinals, Rethin will be challenged by fourth seed Donghyun Hwang of Korea who wriggled past the clutches of Arnav Paparkar 7-5 in the third set.

In the girls section, Maaya Rajeshwaran continued with her fine performance, improving with every match, as she got past seventh seed Rada Zolotareva who had beaten Sahaja Yamalapalli in the $100,000 women’s event last month in Dubai. Maaya led 6-3, 1-0 when Rada retired.

In the semifinals, Maaya will be up against the second seed Eleejah Inisan of France, who beat fifth-seeded Serb, Petra Konjikusic, with ease in the second set after a tussle in the first.
