Paris Olympics: Djokovic, Nadal headline men’s entry list; Swiatek, Gauff lead women’s field
Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are set to compete at Paris Olympics, as per the final entry lists published by the International Tennis Federation on Thursday.
The 38-year-old Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, had won the men’s singles gold in Beijing in 2008 before clinching the gold in men’s doubles eight years later in Rio de Janeiro with his Spanish teammate Marc Lopez.
The 37-year-old Murray is the only man to win consecutive men’s singles gold medals – London 2012 and Rio 2016. The Brit, a three-time Major winner, plans to retire after the Olympics, which will hold tennis matches from July 27 to August 4 on the clay courts at Roland Garros, the site of the French Open.
Djokovic, also 37, is a 24-time Major champion but has never won gold medal at the Summer Games. The Serbian won a bronze in singles in Beijing.
Daniil Medvedev will be competing as a “neutral” athlete rather than representing Russia because of his country’s invasion of Ukraine.
In women’s singles, all eyes will be on Poland’s Iga Swiatek and USA’s Coco Gauff. World No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka, who represents Belarus, would have also competed as a “neutral” since Belarus has aided Russia in the war against Ukraine. However, she has opted out of this edition.
There are 64-player draws for women’s and men’s singles, and 32 teams each in women’s and men’s doubles. The 16 entries for mixed doubles will be determined on July 24. The draw to determine the brackets will be in Paris on July 25.
Among the other players announced Thursday are three-time major champion Carlos Alcaraz — who will play doubles alongside Nadal for Spain — No. 1 Jannik Sinner (Italy), Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Alexander Zverev (Germany), 2008 doubles gold medallist Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland), four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka (Japan), 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu (Canada) and 2018 Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark).
