61st Rubinstein Memorial: Aravindh Chithambaram slips to second after another draw


Aravindh Chithambaram slipped to second spot after playing another draw in the third round of the 61st Rubinstein Memorial chess tournament, taking place at the Spa Theater in Polanica-Zdroj, Poland, on Monday.

Top seed Aravindh was tied with Nodirbek Yakubboev at the top with 1.5 points after two rounds. However, in the third round, India No. 5 Aravindh was held to a draw by Ukrainian GM Igor Kovalenko while Uzbek GM Yakubboev took sole lead with a win over Mateusz Bartel, one of the four Polish GMs in the event.

Radoslaw Wojtaszek joined Aravindh in second place after beating fellow Pole Jan Klimkowski.

In the fourth round, Aravindh, who has a FIDE rating of 2723, faces Yakubboev.

The event is a traditional annual tournament honouring Akiba Rubinstein, one of the most influential Polish players in history.

It has a 10-player round-robin format. The time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 more minutes for the rest of the game, plus a 30-second increment starting from move one.
